Vacation Ready: Essential Legal Preparations for a Worry-Free Getaway
Vacations are for rest, relaxation, and memory-making—not worrying about “what ifs.” But here’s the truth: even the most picture-perfect trip can come with unexpected twists. A medical emergency, a delayed flight, or something more serious back home.
As a Personal Family Lawyer® and someone who’s guided dozens of families through this, I can tell you—a little legal prep goes a long way. Taking just a few small steps before your vacation can protect you, your family, and everything you care about—no matter where in the world you’re headed.
1. Create Powers of Attorney
Before you board that plane, make sure someone you trust can make decisions on your behalf—for both health care and finances.
A Healthcare Power of Attorney ensures someone you trust can speak up for you if you’re injured or hospitalized while traveling.
A Financial Power of Attorney lets someone manage bills, accounts, or emergencies if you’re out of reach or incapacitated.
Think of it like a travel first-aid kit… but for your legal wellbeing.
2. Name Permanent Guardians for Your Kids
If you’re a parent, this one’s huge. Imagine you’re away and something happens—who would care for your kids?
Choosing a Permanent Guardian ensures that if the unexpected occurs, your children won’t end up with a stranger or in state care. It’s not just about safety—it’s about making sure they’re with someone who knows and loves them.
3. Set Up Short-Term Guardians
Even if you’ve chosen a long-term guardian, they may not be available right away—especially if they live out of town.
That’s why naming Short-Term Guardians (like grandparents, babysitters, or family friends) is key. These are the people who can step in immediately while you’re gone or until your permanent guardians can take over.
Pro tip: If your kids are staying home while you travel, make sure whoever is watching them is legally empowered to act in an emergency.
4. Share Your Plans
You’ve done the hard work—now make sure someone knows about it!
Tell your trusted contacts:
Where you’re traveling
How to reach you
What documents you’ve set up (and where they are)
Who you’ve named as guardians or agents
You should also give them our contact info in case they need copies or guidance. We’re just a call away.
